How to Get Rid of Gremlins

The Secret to Longer Lasting Appliances, Smaller Energy Bills, and Shiny Hair

Do your appliances keep breaking? Are you tired of getting pelted with hard water during your morning shower? Do you ever step out of the shower to find that your skin feels unusually dry or that your hair lacks its usual illustrious sheen?

You may be beginning to think that you’re cursed and that all your problems—the broken appliances, the stiff laundry, the exorbitant energy bills, and your perpetually dirty dishes—are actually the work of sneaky little gremlins secretly living in your home and conspiring against you. And while we can’t prove this isn’t the case, we suspect that these problems (and possibly the gremlins) are likely linked to hard water.

What Makes Water Hard?

Minerals like calcium and magnesium cause hard water. And while these minerals aren’t necessarily harmful to your health, they can cause problems for your home’s plumbing, appliances, and even your skin.

Water gathers minerals as it passes through soil and rocks. So, depending on where you live and where your tap water comes from, your water may be harder than tap water in other areas. The effect of which is this: hard water is less effective at lathering soap and causes scale buildup on appliances due to mineral deposits. This can lead to dirty hands and dishes, as well as short-lived appliances—which is probably why that Keurig you got last Christmas barely lasted until Cinco.

Hard water can also lead to other problems, like increased energy bills, dry skin and hair, and stiff laundry, not to mention what hard water can do to your pipes. (The jury is still out on whether gremlins prefer hard water to soft water and whether or not they’re also adding to your problems).

Softer Water is Gentler on Pipes, Appliances, and Skin

Domestic bliss is within reach. A water softener can prevent clogs caused by mineral build up, better lather soap and detergent for cleaner dishes and softer laundry, and grace you and your loved ones with the gift of softer, shinier hair. (Who wouldn’t want that?) It can also lower your energy bills, since water heaters work more efficiently with softened water. Because pipes, water heaters, and appliances don’t have to work as hard to pump and filter water when there’s less buildup from mineral deposits, water softeners can actually improve the performance and lifespan of your pipes and appliances.

How Do Water Softeners Work?

Water softeners use a resin tank filled with small beads to trap and lock minerals. These beads are coated with negatively charged sodium ions. As water enters the tank, the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin beads. At the same time, the negatively charged sodium ions are released into the water as they flow into your home, softening it.

Once the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium, saltwater is flushed through the tank, removing the calcium and magnesium ions and recharging the beads with new sodium ions. This process then repeats itself, ensuring that you have a constant flow of soft water.
