Air Conditioner Not Cooling? Here’s What to Try!

Do you feel like you’re trapped in an oven? Is your A/C running nonstop with nothing to show except for a sky high energy bill?

Then it’s time to roll up your sleeves, strap on your tool belt, and get to work! Below we outline the four most likely reasons your A/C isn’t producing cold air and offer step-by-step instructions to fix it. Let’s get started!

Check Your Thermostat

Before you do anything, make sure your thermostat is set to cooling mode and the temperature is correctly adjusted. Replace the batteries if necessary.

Replace Dirty Air Filters

Clogged filters restrict airflow. We recommend that you change your filters every one to three months to keep your A/C running at peak performance. Follow these simple steps to replace your filters:

  1. Turn Off Your Air Conditioner: Switch off your A/C to avoid any risk of injury and to prevent dust from blowing into your home.
  2. Locate the Air Filter: Check the following areas:
    • The return air duct or grille
    • The air handler unit of your HVAC system
    • Behind the front grille of a window A/C unit
  3. Remove Your Old Filter: Open the filter compartment. Depending on your system, you might need to unscrew or unclip the panel. Note of the direction of the arrows on the old filter.
  4. Check the Filter Size: Look for the dimensions of the filter on the side of your old filter. It’s essential that you get the correct size for replacement.
  5. Install the New Filter: Insert the new filter with the arrows pointing in the airflow direction (toward the blower).
  6. Close the Compartment: Replace the panel or grille and secure it in place.
  7. Turn the A/C Back On: Switch your air conditioner back on.

Clean the Condenser Coils

Condenser coils are vital for your A/C system. Made from copper tubing and aluminum fins, they help release heat from your home into the outside air. Here’s how to clean them:

  1. Turn Off the Power: Use the thermostat to turn off the A/C and disconnect the power at the breaker or outdoor disconnect box.
  2. Access the Coils: Find the coils on the sides of the outdoor unit and remove the access panel.
  3. Remove Debris: Brush off any leaves, grass, and other debris from the coils.
  4. Clean the Coils: Apply a commercial condenser coil cleaner as directed. Then, gently rinse the coils with a garden hose.
  5. Reassemble and Restore Power: Reattach the access panel and turn the power back on.

Check for Refrigerant Leaks

If your A/C is failing to provide cool air, it might have a refrigerant leak. Be on the lookout for these signs:

  • Unusual sounds like hissing or bubbling
  • Ice buildup on the evaporator coils or refrigerant lines
  • A sudden spike in your energy bill without any change in usage

If you suspect a refrigerant leak, contact a professional technician. They have the expertise to find and repair leaks safely.
